everything you want to know before arriving at Casa La Perlita

Where Should We Eat On our First Night in Mérida?

There are a plethora of restaurants and cantinas that you can visit, all with delicious offerings and reasonable prices (and some very extravagant offerings with prices to match), so if you are a foodie you could spend your entire trip dining and still not see it all. We suggest starting on the Paseo de Montejo or at Santa Lucia Square, each less than a 15 minute walk from Casa La Perlita, and strolling around until you see something that appeals to you, there is so much to choose from!

Casa La Perlita is also a short 5-minute walk from one of the best wood-fired pizza places in town and a local favourite burger restaurant, which is very convenient after a long day of travel.

Why Is there an Extra Charge for Electricity?

It is a common practice in Mérida for vacation rentals to charge an additional rate based on use for electricity, and we charge a competitive rate. Our house is equipped with solar panels so we are eco-friendly, but in Mérida the electricity a home generates feeds the local grid not the home directly. As a result, use-based electricity charges are a common occurrence in the area.

Do You Also Charge For Water? Is the Water Safe?

We provide you with a typical per-person supply of bottled drinking water based on the length of your stay and the number of guests listed in the booking. You should not need to purchase extra during your stay, but if you do need more it can be delivered for a nominal charge (as of April 2022 $30 MXN pesos per 5-gallon bottle). Instructions on how to get more water can be found in our on-site Guestbook or App.

The tap water in Mérida is like other places in Mexico, you should ingest it with caution and ideally not at all. It is however, generally safe to rinse your toothbrush with tap water, and don't worry if you accidentally get some in your mouth while showering, as the biggest concern with the city-supply in the city is that it is hard water with many minerals that can be hard on the stomach. To address that we have added a water softener to the house so we do not have hard water, but this process is not the same a purifying the water for consumption. The water supply is not generally dangerous in terms of contaminants but it is better to be safe than sorry. We do supply a crystal-look decanter and glass in each bathroom for you to fill with the bottled water for use in the bathroom. You can easily cook with the tap water so long as you let it come to a roaring boil for at least 5 minutes before adding any food to cook.

There is more information in our on-site Guestbook and our mobile App.
